R’ Yacov Ginsberg was a devoted student of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and a member of the community living in Crown Heights from 1975. He was intimately involved with the life of the Rebbe and the spiritual pulse of the community.
One of his most notable roles was his service in the Chabad Chevra Kadisha of Crown Heights, where he was an active member between 1987 and 1997. He dedicated countless hours to the sacred work of honor and respect for the departed.
R’ Yacov was also a meticulous chronicler of his experiences. Beginning on the 10th of Shevat, 1975, he began to record in his personal diary firsthand accounts of the Rebbe’s activities, teachings, and moments as he observed them in Crown Heights as he davened daily in the Rebbe's Minyan for Maariv. R’ Yacov has not had the time to publish his diary as well as the many unseen pictures he took between 1975 and 1992 of events that took place in 770, providing a rare and intimate lens into the life of the Rebbe and the Chabad community during those years.
R' Yacov merited to go into Yechidus (Private Audience) with the Rebbe on two occasions in the Rebbe's room, which were life-changing experiences.
Many of the cherished Judaica items preserved from his possession were personally handed to him by the holy hands of the Rebbe. Several bear inscriptions and notations that attest to this provenance, underscoring both the authenticity of the objects and the unique spiritual bond he shared with the Rebbe. These objects—whether ritual items, manuscripts, or synagogue-related articles—form a tangible bridge to the Rebbe’s presence and his relationship with his Chassidim.
