A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE GERMAN SURRENDER SIGNING AT LUNEBERG HEATH, SIGNED BY FIELD MARSHAL BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY
A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE GERMAN SURRENDER SIGNING AT LUNEBERG HEATH SIGNED BY FIELD MARSHAL BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY
A superlative signed photograph depicting the signing of the first German surrender of the war at Luneburg Heath on May 4 1945. The 6 x 8 inch contemporary glossy photograph original and unmarked shows Field Marshal BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY (1887-1976) solemnly regarding German Lieut. General Eberhard Kinzel chief of staff to Field Marshal Ernst Busch Commander of German Armies in the Northwest as Kinzel applies his signature to the document. Kinzel’s Knights Cross is clearly visible at his neck line. Montgomery has signed in blue ink at bottom: “Montgomery of Alamein F[ield]. M[arshal].”. Montgomery received his knighthood in 1946 and the style of his signature dates this piece to sometime shortly thereafter. Fine condition.
