ALFRED MOUTON
(1829 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general, commanded the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Wounded at Shiloh, he was made a brigade commander under Richard Taylor, with whom he successfully obstructed Union efforts to secure the Bayou Teche region. Killed at the Battle of Mansfield, while leading his men in a cavalry charge. Very rare war-date D.S. 'Alfr. Mouton Col. Comdg. 18th Regt. La. Vols', 1p. 16 x 10 in., [n.p.], Dec. 31, 1861, a 'Report of the Arms in the 18th in the Regt. La. Vols.', lists eight companies and the numbers of various types of firearms with which they are equipped. The text is very light but still legible, Mouton's signature slightly more so, one vertical fold.
