ANTIQUE KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS FCB CEREMONIAL SWORDS

An antique Knights of Pythias ceremonial sword with an engraved blade and owner initials. Stamped with a walking bear mark by Abraham Kuller Zu Wald. Circa the late 19th century. The sword has a wire-wrapped leather handle and a knight's head pommel crowned with a lion. A guard features the initials FCB which stands for the Pythian motto Friendship, Charity, Benevolence. The sword owned by a member of the Uniformed Rank as the guard has inscribed with the initials UR, and a lily. Comes with a scabbard with a chased Roman soldier figurine in relief, letterings FCB, and a decorative bottom with a lily. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on 19 February 1864. The Knights of Pythias is the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor, and friendship that are the center of the order.

Dimensions: Length 35 1/4 in. All measurements are approximate.
