TWO HANDPAINTED ITALIAN PORCELAIN PARROT FIGURES
A pair of matching handpainted porcelain figurines of green parrots sitting on a branch. Fine detail work. Handsigned Italy on the bottom. Similar items were a very popular design of the Meissen manufacturer in the 19th century. Porcelain birds have their origins in the princely tradition of maintaining collections of living animals and birds in menageries and aviaries, which were viewed as microcosms of the universe, and emblems of royal power and enlightenment.
