TWO RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICONS IN GILT OKLADS
A pair of antique late 19th to early 20th-century Russian icons. First. Christ Pantocrator, God Almighty. Second. Mother of God of Tikhvin. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wooden board. Each icon is enclosed in a gilt riza or oklad with embossed decor, the first icon has cloisonne ornaments on the halo. The icons are titled in Church Slavonic on the bottom. Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons that is said to be one of the icons written by St. Luke the Evangelist. Since the 14th century, the icon was held in Tikhvin, where eventually Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded to host the icon. Religious Christian Collectibles, Russian Icons.
