Color lithograph on paper. After an original painting by Mori Sosen, 1747 to 1821, a Japanese Edo painter of the Shijo school who is famous for his depictions of monkeys. The artwork depicts the three wise monkeys, embodying the proverbial principle See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil. Calligraphic inscription above. Artists signature and seal in the lower right. Cardboard mat, wooden frame. Monkeys are a historically prominent feature in the religion, folklore, and art of Japan, as well as in Japanese proverbs and idiomatic expressions.
