A RARE PERSIAN BEHEADING SWORD
A very rare example, the karabela hilt wrought entirely of steel pommel, with borders inlaid in gold and silver vinework. The broad straight, double-edged blade with waved edges and rounded, bifurcate tip, honoring the sword of the Prophet Muhammad and Ali, Zulfaqar. With finely chiseled panels of hunting birds and their prey amongst foliage at either side of the forte together with piercing and profiling at the base, bordering a narrow central fuller. Forged of fine, actively-grained Persian Kara Khorassan black wootz damascus steel. Of a form typical of beheading swords made in the reign of Nasreddin Shah Qajar (r. 1848-1896.) Mid-19th century, possibly earlier. Areas of rubbing. Overall length 80.8cm/ 31 7/8". Condition II
