A RARE SCOTTISH TRANSITIONAL RAPIER
Often called a town sword by virtue of its compact hilt, which is wrought entirely of chiseled steel, the pommel and quillon terminals in the form of thistles, covered in Celtic knotwork in relief, the captured grip with brass wire wrap, the ferrules well faceted. The ecusson chiseled in high relief with a male bust, ostensibly that of the owner, the dished guard made inn two pieces, the upper with a dentated border, supported by a rhombus-shaped plate. The straight, double-edged blade of hexagonal section at the forte transitioning to a flattened diamond section with central ridge, tapering continuously to the tip. Last quarter of the 17th century. Areas of pitting and rubbing, guard slightly loose. Overall length 107cm/ 42.12".
