A RARE OTTOMAN HANCER DAGGER
A seldom-encountered type strongly associated with the Siege of Vienna in 1683, due to similar examples found in the abandoned Ottoman camp following the rout by King Jan Sobieski. The fine, faceted grip carved of a single large section of pale green jade, the curved double-edged blade wrought of exceptionally fine Persian black wootz, with an engraved panel at the forte surrounded by gold inlay, now worn, finely pierced in geometrical patterns and embellished with turquoises and corals set on silver wire. In its original, silk velvet-covered wooden with gilt mounts with engraved borders. Latter 17th century. Minor chip to pommel, gold worn, some stones replaced, chape restored. Overall length 28.5 cm / 11 /4". Condition III
