A FINE KHAZAR SABER SWORD
The blade of characteristic Khazar form, robust, shallowly curved and wrought with a distinct raised back edge or yelman, and thrusting tip with central ridge, with rare and unusual groove and repeated struck crescent marks at the spine. The diminutive guard, with incipient langets and swollen quillon finials, retains much original heavy gilding, and is modeled in relief on each side of the ecusson with a horses head (?) flanked by a wolf in profile to either side. The en suite pommel a flattened cylinder with lobate terminal, incised with a characteristic solar disk with openwork panels on the obverse and retains its original lanyard ring and considerable original gold. Fitted with an acrylic grip for display. 9th-10th century. Excavated. As found. An enduring type of sword which combines elegance and effectiveness; it influenced the form for a thousand years. Ex-Egil Haggmann Collection, N.Y. 1974. Overall length 88cm/ 34.6". Condition V.
