A RARE KHAZAR KILLED SWORD
The blade of characteristic Khazar form, thick, shallowly curved and wrought with a raised back edge or yelman, the iron guard slightly bowed, with rhombus ecusson and bead finials. Retains its flattened, cylindrical pommel fitted with an acrylic grip for display. 9th-10th century. Excavated. As found. Known as a “killed” sword, indicating the blade had been heated and bent at angles in order to render it unusable once interred with a Khazar warrior. Ex-Egil Haggmann Collection, N.Y. 1974. Overall length 39.5cm. Condition V.
