AN IMPORTANT OTTOMAN SWORD PLEVNA 1877
A high-ranking Ottoman officer’s sword, the hilt mounted entirely in silver, grip with rolled pommel and guard with scrolled quillons, engraved throughout. The long, broad blade lightly-curved and multi-fullered, with radiused tip and traces of etching at the forte. The velvet-covered wooden scabbard with silver mounts finely engraved and set with filigreed panels and the Ottoman star and crescent, and inscribed in Russian, PLEVNA 10 DEC. 1877 together with a much smaller, illegible Russian inscription. The chape with Imperial Russian 84 silver mark. Dated 1877. Minor wear, one langet partly lacking, rubbed. Plevna was the deciding battle of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and a decisive victory for Imperial Russian and Bulgarian forces. High-ranking Ottoman officers were required to surrender their swords to their Russian counterparts. The sword of Edhem Pasha, Ottoman Field Marshal at Plevna, is known to have been captured and inscribed as well. Very few were otherwise memorialized with inscriptions such as this one. Overall length 92cm. Condition II
