A RARE INDIAN BATTLEAXE
A seldom encountered form from the Deccan region. The finely-wrought head of crescent form, with fine fully-modeled peacock head terminals, likely evoking Krishna, and other Indian deific associations. The surface deeply chiseled with broad leaves with in geometical borders and a pronounced, profiled hammer peen. The haft composed of a full tang to which shaped polished antler panels are riveted, with a long iron ferrule and faceted butt with expanded base. 17th-18th century. Minor edge wear. Overall length 51.5cm.
