A RARE CIRCASSIAN SHASHKA SWORD
Made for a Russian officer, the hilt and scabbard mounts of silver, finely engraved and nielloed in complex vinework and sun disk motifs. The fine, lightly curved blade well balanced, with complex fullering and struck GENOVA twice at the left forte. The wooden scabbard covered in leather, the silver mounts engraved and nielloed en suite with the hilt, the reverse of the locked with engraved and nielloed cartouche containing the Cyrillic initals, A.B., and the date, 1864. Dated 1864. Light wear. Quite similar examples belonging to the Caucasian Collection of the State Historical Museum, Moscow, appears in E.G. Astvatsaturian, Weapons of the Caucasian Peoples, St. Petersburg, Atlant Publishers, 2004, p. 258 and passim. Overall length 88.1cm. Condition II
