A RARE ENGLISH LOBSTERTAIL HELMET
A rare and highly identifiable form produced at the Greenwich Armoury. Wrought of steel, with characteristic elongated, peaked and pivoting visor and large ear guards with distinctive pierced hinges. The neck composed of four lames, the last set at a right angle to the others and likewise elongated. Pierced around the entire periphery for padding. Decorated with lineal borders, studs and rolled edges throughout. Retains its original pierced plume-holder and black finish. Beginning of the 17th century. Finish rubbed and scuffed. Overall height 30 cm. Another example of this small and select group is in the Royal Armouries Collections, Leeds, and is published in David Blackmore, Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars, London, Royal Armouries: 1990, 16, Fig 13.
