He studied with Maestro Aldo Zeetti in Perugia. In 1950, just 20 years old, he won the competition of the Experimental Opera Theater "Adriano Belli" in Spoleto, where he made his debut with Il trovatore. In 1951 he is already at the Rome Opera, alongside Mario Del Monaco, La forza del destino, that finally launches the "star system". It is the Tullio Serafin, his great admirer, who urges her, especially in the early years of his career, to face the great heroines of Verdi. After a happy Aroldo in the 1952-53 season at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, is proposed as Aida, Leonora in Il trovatore and La forza del Destino, Luisa Miller, Elena in I Vespri Siciliani, Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, Violetta in La traviata, Elisabetta in Don Carlo, Desdemona in Otello. Of the 1954 debut at La Scala as Desdemona and 1955 major debut at the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna State Opera and the United States at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Of the 1956 debut as Aida at the Metropolitan in New York (next to Carlo Bergonzi, even novice to the Met), where it will appear regularly until 1960. It also continued appearances at La Scala, in particular in some inaugural evenings: Aida in 1956, The battle of Legnano in 1961, Il trovatore in 1962. Artist with remarkable eclecticism soon probe other authors of the most diverse, playing Elsa in Lohengrin, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Linda di Chamounix, Norma, The Flame. It ranges also in verismo opera Cavalleria rusticana, Andrea Chénier, Fedora, but above all in the universe with Puccini's Manon Lescaut, Tosca, La Boheme, La Fanciulla del West, Suor Angelica, Madama Butterfly. Right in the role of Cio-Cio-San performs in March of 1958 at the Metropolitan Theater, under the direction of Dimitri Mitropoulos and a very meticulous direction from the Kabuki Japanese theater enjoying success he goes around the world and is testimionato from a recording live. At the end of the 1960s there is a slight decrease in the career due to an intense activity, but until 1974, the year of the withdrawal, the artistic career will continue unabated. Antonietta Stella was leading interpreter of the second half of the twentieth century in the Italian opera repertoire, it characterized as a lyric-driven soprano, with remarkable agility and extension, and instantly recognizable for particularly charming stamp.
