Silver large kovsch, St. Petersburg, Julius Rappoport for Fabergé, early 20th century
decorated with semi-precious cabochon stones. Circular in shape, it bears the repeated Russian imperial coat of arms; the handle is adorned with two partly enamelled pendants. Complete with relative ladle, cm. 18x17x11, total gross weight gr. 717.Julius Rappoport (Isaac Ambramovich Rappoport, Kovno 1851-St. Petersburg 1917) was born into a Jewish community in Kovno, Lithuania. He began his career in 1880 as an apprentice to the silversmith Scheff in Berlin, before becoming a master and moving to St. Petersburg as Fabergé's chief silversmith, becoming one of the four principal "opera masters". His production was quite varied, from tableware to picture frames, but he also carried out special commissions for the imperial family.Although little else is known about his life, Rappoport's objects are highly sought after and are considered some of the finest silver pieces produced by the Fabergé workshop.
