Fascinating and important survey of the religious ceremonies of the world. A beautifully illustrated work. The book was recited "The book that changed Europe". It laid the foundations to critical study of religions, and influenced deeply the presentation of world religions in the west. This book broke all the conventions by presenting all religions even Pagan ones in an equal, non judgmental approach, went on to promote religious tolerance by showing the unwanted outcome of religious fanaticism, and praised tolerant religions, such as Islam!

Judaism was given a broad reference, although in a time of widespread antisemitism. This research portrays the customs of the Jews in a sympathetic manner and includes 15 engravings in the chapter on Judaism alone, including a very famous one, a two page illustration of Purim at the Amsterdam Synagogue. Picard knew the Jewish community of Amsterdam well, and made an engraving for their "Tikun Sofrim" book.

This book was banned by the Church, but nevertheless was published in 4 languages and sold 4000 copies.

This work is based on Picard's 'Ceremonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde' published in Amsterdam between 1723 and 1743 and, according to the title, includes all the plates that appear in the earlier work. The text for this edition appears to have been so extensively rewritten and improved by Poncelin de La Roche-Tilhac, the editor, that it almost amounts to a new and separate work.

המהדורה שלפנינו היא מ - 1789, והטקסט המופיע בה שונה באופן מהותי מהטקסט במהדורה הראשונה, לאחר שעבר עריכה, הרחבה ושינויים רבים עד כדי כך שמבחינה טקסטואלית זו יצירה שונה לחלוטין.
