Letter by Harav Nechemiah Alter, son of the Sfas Emes of Gur, interesting letter with two of his holy signatures!

Letter handwritten and signed by Harav Nechemiah Alter, son of the Sfas Emes of Gur.

Distinguished letter written in Lodz on Wednesday, Parashas Tetzaveh. The date does not appear but it is likely that it was written shortly before the outbreak of World War II: "... who knows what the future will bring" and he quotes the Sefer Chareidim that there are menios to moving to Eretz Yisrael. (It should be noted that Harav Nechemiah Alter moved to Eretz Yisrael after World War I, later returning to Poland, where he served as the Lodz community's moreh tzedek and as a member of the community's Rabbinical Committee.) Later on in the letter he mentions the "esrog pushka" and concludes with "Happy Purim and a kosher Pesach." After his signature there are a few additional lines and then another signature.

On the other side of the paper is an additional letter written by the son-in-law of Harav Chaim Zundel of Ostrovtza - the Ostrovtza Rebbe is mentioned.

Taping, not on the text, on the upper part of the sheet and on the other side. There is a tear across the width of the page with damage to the text. There are two small tears at the corners, not on the text. Aside from the tear at the center of the page, the letter is in good condition.

Harav Nechemiah Alter [1875 - 1942] was the son of the Sfas Emes and the brother of the Imrei Emes of Gur. He married the daughter of Harav Zvi Hersh Morgenstern of Lomaz-Kotzk. During World War I, he moved to Warsaw, and after the war, he moved to Eretz Yisrael and settled in Tzefas. After some time, he moved to Yerushalayim. He was renowned as a gaon in both the revealed and hidden Torah. He served as Rosh Yeshivas Sfas Emes. In approximately 1929, he returned to Poland due to a medical issue afflicting his wife, and he settled in Otwock. Later, he moved to Lodz, where he was appointed moreh tzedek and a member of the community's rabbinical board. The Lev Simchah of Gur was his son-in-law. Remnants of his divrei Torah were printed in the sefer Chiddushei Rabbi Nechemiah.

מכתב הגה"ק רבי נחמיה אלתר בן הרה"ק ה'שפת אמת' מגור, מכתב מעניין עם שני חתימות יד קדשו!

"כי מי יודע מה יולד יום .... עיכובים למנוע איש ישראל לבא לא"י".

מכתב בעצם כתב יד קדשו וחתימותיו של הגה"ק רבי נחמיה אלטר בן הרה"ק מרן ה'שפת אמת' מגור.

מכתב חשוב, שנכתב בלאדז' ביום רביעי פרשת תצוה, לא נכתב תאריך אך ייתכן שנכתב סמוך לימי מלחמת העולם השנייה "כי מי יודע מה יולד יום" וכן כותב על כך שכתבו בס' חרדים על כך שיש מניעות לעלות לארץ ישראל(יש לציין כי הגה"ק רבי נחמי' עלה לארץ הקודש לאחר מלחמת העולם הראשונה ומאוחר יותר חזר לפולין ושם כיהן לאחר זמן בלודז' כמו"צ וחבר ועד הרבנים של הקהילה). בהמשך המכתב כותב על קופסת האתרוג "את הפישקא על האתרוג", ובסופו מברך "פורים שמח וחג המצות כשר", לאחר חתימת יד קדשו, מוסיף עוד מספר שורות וחותם שנית.

מעבר הדף מכתב נוסף בכתב יד חתן רבי חיים זונדל מאוסטרובצא – מוזכר האדמו"ר הרה"ק מאסטראווצא.

הדבקה לא על הטקסט בחלקו העליון של הדף ומעבר הדף. קרע לרוחב הדף עם פגיעות בטקסט. שני קרעים קטנים בקצוות לא על על הטקסט. מלבד הקרע במרכז הדף – מצב טוב.

הגאון הקדוש רבי נחמיה אלתר [תרל"ה – תש"ב] בן הרה"ק 'השפת אמת' ואחיו של הרה"ק ה'אמרי אמת' מגור. נישא לבתו של הרה"ק רבי צבי הירש מורגנשטרן מלומאז'-קוצק. במלחמת העולם הראשונה עבר לווארשא ולאחר המלחמה עלה לארץ הקודש ונתיישב בצפת, ולאחר תקופה עבר לירושלים. נודע כגאון מופלג בנגלה ונסתר. כיהן כראש ישיבת שפת אמת. בסביבות שנת תרפ"ט חזר לפולין לצורך רפואי של הרבנית, ונתיישב באטוואצק. מאוחר יותר עבר לעיר לודז', שם מונה למו"צ וחבר ועד הרבנים של הקהילה. חתנו הוא האדמו"ר ה'לב שמחה' מגור. שרידים מדברי תורתו נדפסו בספר 'חדושי רבי נחמיה'.
