Chesney Francis Rodon - Expedition to survey the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, 1835, 1836 and 1837

First Edition, 2 volumes, London: Longman, Brown 1850.

The British expedition to Perth and the Tigris set out in 1835 under the leadership of General Francis Raudon Chesney -

Francis Rawdon Chesney 1789-1872, with the aim of establishing a trade route between India and England through the rivers of Babylon.

In 1829, Chesney set out for Constantinople with the intention of participating in the Russo-Turkish War, which ended while he arrived in Constantinople, and was persuaded by the British Ambassador to Forte, Sir R. Gordon, to conduct a research tour of Egypt and Syria.
This was a momentary commitment, as Chesney was the first to prove the feasibility of the Suez Canal. He investigated the Euphrates twice, initially alone, on a raft, secretly and at great risk, often absorbed fire by hostile Arabs and later by means of two steamships (a new invention in those years), specially adapted for sailing in both rivers, the expedition conducted a first survey And the geography along the rivers.
With the return of the delegation to England, Chesney began writing a comprehensive essay documenting his findings. In a great information book about history, a first edition that includes a comprehensive overview of the rivers, residents and places where the expedition passed. Geographical conditions, flora and fauna, local culture (food, clothing, religious customs), trade and political situation, and even a review of sites mentioned in the Bible. , Acre, Safed, Beit She'an, Mount Tabor, Gaza, Jerusalem, Red Sea, and more.
Chesney was sent to China before he finished writing the history of the expedition and half of the manuscript was lost ... hence only two volumes were published as opposed to the four shown on the title page.

Chesney was a first-rate researcher, his courage, perseverance, attention to detail and thorough work are reflected in the studies and surveys he produced. Travel stories in Palestine include descriptions written by travelers throughout Palestine, the Holy Land, and are important sources for researching the history of Palestine and the history of Israel.

Chesney was sent to China before finishing writing the history of the expedition and half of the manuscript was lost
