The Katowice Conference was the first conference of members of the Hibat Zion movement, held on November 6, 1884
On Montefiore's 100th birthday. In the city of Katowice (now Poland) on the Russian border Germany, initiated by Dr. Yehuda Leib Pinsker and Rabbi Shmuel Mohliber. Zionism in Russia was prohibited by law, so the conference was disguised as a 100th anniversary party for Minister Moshe Montefiore, the real purpose of the conference was to try to solve the problems of the Hibat Zion movement's organization and find a way to help settle in Israel.
