RAGGEDY ANN AND
RAGGEDY ANDY TM
70 Years Young
by CATHY BEYLON
She began as a rag doll, an old toy tossed into an attic. There, a girl named Marcella found
her. Because Marcella was often ill and had to spend much of her time at home, her father, a
writer named Johnny Gruelle, looked for ways to keep her entertained. He saw possibili-
ties in the old rag doll, which he fixed up and named. Не turned the doll, with its bright
shoe-button eyes and red yarn hair, into Raggedy Ann. . Gruelle, knowing how much

The Raggedy Ann & Andy
Bicentennial Plate
Stitched and sewn together from assorted
bits and pieces, much the same way
Betsy Ross made the first American flag,
Raggedy Ann and Andy TM are somewhat
symbolic of the vast, melting-pot population
of our great country. In a special titter-
tattered salute to our Bicentennial, these
two colorful American characters are seen
marching to the beat of a very special
drummer. Happy 200th, America.
Note: This is a decorative accessory not to
be used for the consumption of food.
