These famous Japanese cherry trees were presented by the
2 pcs.
mayor and people of Tokio, Japan, in :912, to the city of Wash-

ington, D. C., through the Japanese ambassador, and accepted in
the name of the people of Washington by President and Mrs. Taft.
There were three thousand trees in all, and were planted along
the stone wall of the East and West Potomac Park, which are
bounded
on one side by the Potomac River and Tidal Basin.
