Cups and Saucers Quilt - Mary Schafer
Cups and Saucers Quilt signed and dated Mary Schafer, 1989. This quilt is from the Mary Schafer Collection. She was the quilter and collector from the book Mary Schafer - American Quilt Maker by Gwen Marston. It measures 80.5x95.5", comprised of 30 blocks, 9x9", set on point, 5 by 6, with off white solid alternating squares and setting triangle. There is a 2" blue print inner border, followed by a 2.5" sawtooth border, and a 5" off white outer border. It is handpieced, hand quilted, and hand embroidered. Thin cotton batting and an off white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied off white binding, by hand. There is a sleeve on the back top edge for hanging. MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER pg 11-12: photo of antique Midwest Amish cups and saucers quilt in black and red, ca 1920-30, “the last quilt Mary bought … for three hundred dollars in the 1980s.” This quilt is probably Mary’s version of that one. Pg 113: “She excelled at designing original borders that harmonized with the interior of her quilts. Whether pieced or appliquéd, Mary’s borders always ‘fit’ exactly. She was especially clever in devising symmetrical border resolutions.” Pg 116: “she also liked using historical colors such as blue and white, which were popular in the mid-nineteenth century.” Photo on pg 114. Very good condition with slight soiling on the back left edge. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of important Quilt History! This quilt has been professionally appraised and reflected in our estimate. In house Flat Rate Shipping of $25 is a domestic shipping estimate for first quilt and includes insurance. We will gladly combine multiple lots for your convenience and economy. Each additional quilt or quilt top we can pack in the same box is $5 each. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
