1848 Elizabeth Hooton Album Quilt - NJ and KY
1848 Elizabeth Hooton Album Quilt with many name inscriptions from Camden County, New Jersey and Louisville, Kentucky. It measures 84 by 90 inches. It is comprised of 45 pieced blocks which appear to be an original design, 10 by 10 inches, set on point, 5 by 5, and staggered, with 2 inch stripe print stashing and Turkey red print cornerstones. There are partial blocks used as setting triangles. It is hand pieced, hand appliquéd, hand inked, and hand quilted. There is thin cotton batting and a pink print stripe reverse. The edge is finished with a woven tape edge along one side and the back brought to the front along the other 3 sides. In the center is an appliquéd flower with green leaves with the inscription Elizabeth who tends album quilt. Great variety of mid 19th century fabrics including Prussian blue, chintz, turkey red and more. The center of each block is either hand inscribed or Ink stamped with names, dates, and locations. Mostly from New Jersey (Camden County, Moorestown, Pembertown) and Louisville, KY. Some inscriptions include Hannah Ann Small, Pemberton; Hannah H Hooton, Delaware, Camden County, 1845; Emma L Coles, Camden County, Delaware Township, in the State of NJ, 1844; Elizabeth B Wi(??), Philadelphia; Susan B Austin; Beulah Ann Brown; William & Eliza A Hooton, Louisville, Kentucky 1846; Alexander Hooton, Delaware, Camden County, 1845; Joseph B Coles, Camden County, Delaware Township, in the State of NJ, 1844; Sarah Ann Steward; Mary Jane Small, Pemberton, NJ 1845; Aaron Hooton, Louisville, KY, 1846;Ann Machin, Delaware, Camden Co, NJ, 1848; Joseph Hooton, Louisville, KY, 1848; Anna B Hopkins; John Cole; William B Steward; ??? Lippincott, Moorestown; Hannah Lippincott; and many more, some illegible. The quilt is in fair condition with toning and spots, and several areas of deterioration, but many have been stabilized with crepeline or archival tulle.
