1914 US Army Colonel Smith Painted Folk Art Trunk
This wonderful folk art trunk probably started out as a military tool chest and at some point Colonel F. M. Smith painted it and adorned it with cut brass patterns of star, diamond and circle shapes, domed brass tacks and made a very ornate and beautiful folk art trunk with his name and rank and the date Nov. 12th 1914 spelled out in painted domed tacks. It has 3 layers of pullout drawers with smaller compartments with all of them painted too. The trunk is has a forest green base with red and yellow flower motif. The colors have muted over time but is still has strong color with a pleasant and joyful appeal. The condition is well worn with crazing to paint and some paint loss. It measures 31.25" long x 14" wide and 11" depth. This truck came out of Wisconsin and my have some research possibilities. It has interest as a very decorative folk art piece as well as the military connection.
