WWII USMC 3rd Marine Div. Iwo Jima Named Grouping.
3rd Marine Division grouping that belonged to SGT Joseph Mulvey, recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star for Valor for disregarding his own safety and walking across an airfield under fire and carried a wounded comrade to safety on Iwo Jima.
The highlight of the group is the RESTRICTED map of Iwo Jima (10"x8") given to Marines landing there. According to Joseph Mulvey's son. his father carried this on his person, even after the war. Other souvenirs from his service are a pocket shaving kit inscribed "I was on Iwo Jima", a small pocket statue of a Saint Christopher in carrying case, a corked jar labeled: :`Sand Iwo Jima 2-19-45" Pocket alcohol sterilizer carried by Mulvey on Iwo Jima. Three V-Mail's written to his mother dated 9-1-1944; 9-2-1944; and 12-12-1944. Pamphlet,: Individual Battle Doctrine RESTRICTED NAVMC 1013-DPP January 1944.Pamphlet, War Dept. Basic Field Manual. Volume III Basic Weapons, 1932. Unit History, The Third Marine Division. First Printing 1948. Fairly tight binding, clean copy. Large frame (33"x17") with photocopies of 9 letters and two newspaper clippings pertaining to Mulveys action. Can be removed from frame for shipping. Yellow folder with various notes of Mulvey's service compiled by consigner for displays also included.
