The Little Cohen - Antisemitic humor Book - Pocket Edition, 1915

Der Kleine Cohn in der Westentasche Anekdoten und von G.Danner - 'Little Mr. Cohen in the pocket ...'. By R. Buttig, Published by G. Danner. c. 1915. German. antisemitic humor book in pocket edition, printed on blue paper. On the cover is a drawing of the ridiculous figure of the jew 'Little Cohen'.

Each page contains a number of short jokes in the form of negotiations between two Jews, mocking the character of the Jew, his speech and language, the way he trades, the customs and religion of the Jews. In the last pages many advertisements.

The cartoons of "Little Cohen" were the subject of many antisemitic postcards and illustrations in the early 20th century. His dwarf character first appeared in the children's song composed by Julius Einödshofer, named 'Have you seen Little Cohen?' depicting a traitorous Jew who before he was caught in his betrayal he simply 'disappeared'. Under his influence, puppets appeared in German children's rooms in the shape of 'Little Cohen' next to the lyrics, and the German "Thalia" Theater was quick to distribute postcards bearing the ridiculous character of 'Little Cohen'. In 1907 a German newspaper described the suicide of a Jewish soldier after harassment by non-Jewish soldiers under the headline 'Little Cohn'. The character reappeared in various publications in ridiculous situations with antisemitic captions. Following the distribution of the figure in various publications, the Jews of Germany were generally referred to by the derogatory phrase 'Little Cohen'.
