An antisemitic poster restricting the Jews of Krakow to move on the roads, as part of the aggravation of Nazi measures against Krakow Jewry

An antisemitic poster forbidding Jews from walking in the squares and main traffic routes in Krakow. May 1, 1940. Polish.

The poster states that forbade Jews from being in key areas such as squares, in the main ways between the Royal Hotel and the main post office building, as well as in the central market. There is also a ban on Jews using the growing vegetation on the streets for their own needs. Jews who violate the installation will be severely punished.

The instruction was published as part of the aggravation of Nazi measures against the Jews after the German occupation of Krakow. Beginning in the spring of 1940, the Nazis began to tighten antisemitic decrees against the Jews of Krakow. The decrees included a night curfew on Jews, a ban on tram rides, a ban on visiting non-Jewish cafes, cinemas and theaters, a ban on changing residence without a permit, and a ban on traveling by train. As well as traffic restrictions on city streets as in the poster before us. As a result, tens of thousands of Jews left Krakow between May 18 and August 15, 1940, following an opportunity given to leave with their property "of their own free will, " the German mayor announced. They left for eastern Poland, which was Russian territory, and also for small towns and villages around the city, where they hoped to be away from the eyes of the Germans.
