"Caution Gauls! King of the Jews" - an anti-Semitic poster on the background of the Panama affair. France, 1892
AHMRA! ALERTE, GAULOIS! - LE ROI DES JUIF - "Careful Gauls, King of the Jews!" A large anti-Semitic poster which was attached as a gift to the readers of the anti-Semitic newspaper LA LIBRE PAROLE by the anti-Semitic propagandist Edouard Drumont. France, 1892. Illustrator: Rougeron Vignerol.
The poster was made on the background of the Panama affair. On the left is seen a Jew wearing a hat with the words "Kosher" in Hebrew, emerging from the exit of the canal on which is written: CAPITAL SEMITE - "Semitic control" which alludes to Jewish control of government decisions in France. With one hand he is holding a French worker digging the canal and "PANAMA" is written at his feet, and with the other hand he is threatening with a whip a French "Gaelic" character that characterizes the mythological heroes of France from years past, to imply that the Jew controls the current decisions of the administration to collapse the long-standing French empire, And there is no power in the world that can stand against him. Below is an anti-Semitic inscription expressing the Jew's contempt for the descendant of the French "Gauls", those mythological heroes of France from the Middle Ages.
In 1892, the French company that cut the Panama Canal that connected the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean went bankrupt, following one of the biggest corruption scandals in French history, in which hush money was paid to politicians from all ends of the political spectrum in order for them to eliminate the difficulties the company encountered. Due to the involvement of a number of famous Jews in the corruption case, a venomous propaganda campaign against the Jews was conducted in several French newspapers which sought to publish the Jews involved and come to an account with them. The newspaper that led the way in the French press to publish virulent anti-Semitic cartoons throughout the affair was the LA LIBRE PAROLE.
