Birmingham Jewry - Important Publication About the Jewish Community of Birmingham - Photos

Birmingham Jewry 1749-1914: A thorough study of the Jewish community of Birmingham in the 18th and 19th centuries, Part I. Published by The Birmingham Jewish history research group - led by Aubrey Neman. The group published its findings in the booklet before us in 1980. Results of many years of in-depth research - "No Man Can Do the Basic Historical Research that this volume represents" - Only Edition. English. Photographs and charts.

The results of an important historical study conducted by a group of Jewish historians in Birmingham over a period of 5 years. The group took upon itself the task of researching the history of the Jewish community in a small community outside London - Birmingham. The group researched the history of the Jewish community in the city, beginning with the settlement of the first Jews in the city in 1749, and for the first time succeeded in drawing a clear picture of the streets in which the Jews lived, their social and economic status, the occupations of the Jews for a living (tailoring was the most common profession among Birmingham Jewry), the organizational structure of the community, the local Jewish press, a list Jewish surnames that never appeared together in a single work, and more.

In its research, the group relied on various reports examined in comparison with the community records of Jewish names, as well as on the works of Bill William in Manchester, and also assisted by the Cambridge University Library and Hong Kong, and the British Museum, and many more, through these records it reached a first-of-its-kind in-depth picture that goes into great detail of this Jewish community. Aubrey Neman, who headed that investigative group and closely observed its work, writes in the introduction: "No man can do the basic historical research that this volume represents". The initial idea of studying Birmingham Jewry as a group of its own was raised by Dr. Mordechai Gihon of Tel Aviv University when he visited it in the 1970s.

The booklet is accompanied by some 40 important photographs and diagrams documenting the Jewish community of Birmingham. Among them: Eastern European Jews in Birmingham, a diagram of an analysis of Jewish businesses in the city, Dr. Shmuel Salomon, the Birmingham Jewelry and Goldsmiths Association, Abraham Danziger - President, the Nathan Brothers Printing Book, the "Jewish Charity" Children's Hospital - 1904, the "Court" of the poor neighborhoods 1880, settlement maps 1851-1871, and more.
