Persecution of Jews in Russia - Report on the Assistance in Liverpool to Refugees from the Storms in the Negev pogroms. Liverpool, 1882

Persecution of the Jews in Russia, by Liverpool Commission, published by Liverpool Egerton Smith & Co, Liverpool 1882. A detailed and rare report on the organized assistance provided in Liverpool to Jewish refugee families who fled from the southwestern part of the Russian Empire during the Russian pogroms ("Storms in the Negev") in the spring of 1881 on their way to the United States.

An extensive description of the assistance provided by the local branch of the English Jewish Society to the thousands of Jews who fled from Russian towns following the pogroms. The refugees, who essentially lost all their belongings, received clothing, temporary housing, security in their places of residence, money, and more. According to the report, the committee also ensured kosher food for the Jews on the ships en route to the United States, and more. The report includes a letter from one of the refugees, written on behalf of all the Jews aboard the ship "Brooklyn" detailing the extensive assistance they received during their journey to America, including ample food and meeting all their needs. It also provides information about the special discounts they received for railway fares in America and more. Also is written that at least 90 percent of the refugees would become citizens in their new country. Included is a detailed list of expenses of the Liverpool Committee.

The pogroms known as the "Storms in the Negev" in 1881 broke out following the assassination of Tsar Alexander II by the revolutionary movement Narodnaya Volya, and were fueled by anti-Semitic newspapers and government representatives. During the year between the assassination of the Tsar and the emergence of a new policy, a wave of pogroms occurred, which increased the emigration of Jews from the Russian Empire (primarily to the United States) and strengthened among others the recognition of the need for a Jewish national movement.
