Five anti-Semitic German Mark bills. Germany, 1922-1923

5 banknotes for 1000 "German Marks 1922" with an anti-Semitic caricature stamped on them, Germany, 1922-1923.

Banknotes: A stereotypical Jewish figure with text: "Without a solution to the Jewish problem there is no salvation for humanity. Jews out!", a Jew being led by an angel with text: "Marxism is the guardian angel of capitalism", the two-faced Jew "Bought from a Jew, oh no!", the German in service of the Jewish tycoon, the figure of Karl Liebknecht from the Communist Party of Germany with a quote: "We are here and we are staying! Victory will be ours! Despite everything!!".

Germany's hyperinflation in the 1920s had many causes, but like in many historical crises, anti-Semites were convinced that "the rich Jews" were responsible for the economic crisis. The stereotype of the Jew exploiting the weak and the time of crisis to enrich himself was very common in Germany after WWI. At that time, Germans printed many antisemitic caricatures on regular banknotes depicting the Jew as causing the crisis and calling for his expulsion from Germany and the elimination of the Jewish people. (See additional examples in the National Library's collection).

5 banknotes of 1000 Marks: 8.5X16 cm. Three serial numbered notes in red, two serial numbered notes in brown. Overall good condition.
