- Solon in Lydien, a play in three acts by Theodor Herzl. Wiener Verlag, Vienna-Leipzig, 1904. First edition. Solon in Lydia (German: Solon in Lydien) is a short story by Theodor Herzl, published in 1900. The plot takes place in the 6th century BCE, based on the legendary encounter between the Athenian Solon and Croesus king of Lydia. Croesus is presented with a revolutionary invention that allows unlimited production of food, without the need to grow crops, thus eliminating the need for manual labor. Yet the invention does not lead to an improvement in people's well-being, as it makes them lazy and hedonistic, subsequently rebellious and violent towards each other, threatening the stability of society as a whole. The story was also adapted into a play by Herzl, premiered in 1903 at the German Theater in Prague.
