Persecution of the Jews in Russia - the aid report of the "Storms in the Negev" riots refugees in Liverpool. Liverpool, 1882

Persecution of the Jews in Russia - Report of the Liverpool Commission, published by Liverpool Egerton Smith & Co, Liverpool 1882. A detailed and rare report on the organized aid received by Jewish refugee families in Liverpool who fled from southwestern Russian Empire during the Russian pogroms ("Storms in the Negev") in spring 1881 on their way to the United States.

A detailed report on aid from the British Jewish community to thousands of Jews who fled towns in Russia following the pogroms. The refugees, who had actually lost all their possessions, received clothing, temporary housing, security at their places of residence, money and more. The committee also provided kosher food for Jews aboard ships on their way to the United States. The report includes a letter from one refugee writing on behalf of all Jews aboard the ship "Brooklyn" about the great aid received aboard the ship bound for America: abundant food and all their needs, noting Jews received special reduced railway fares within America itself, and more. It's also written that at least 90% of refugees will become citizens in their new country. The report includes a detailed list of expenditures by the Liverpool Fund Committee.

The names of the President and members of the Liverpool Commission appear on the title page: Mansion house Relief Fund. President; Davisd, Edwin M; Silver, . B.L. Benas, Rev. H. The 1881 pogroms, referred to as "Storms in the Negev" broke out following the assassination of Tsar Alexander II by the Narodnaya Volya revolutionary movement and were fueled by antisemitic newspapers and government representatives. In the year between the Tsar's murder and the formation of new policy, a wave of pogroms increased Jewish emigration from the Russian Empire (mainly to the United States) and strengthened the recognition among others of the need for a Jewish national movement.
