The Struwwelpeter Alphabet - a parody on prominent figures in the Victorian era. London, 1900 - First edition

The Struwwelpeter Alphabet by Harold Begbie, published by Grant Richards, illustrations by F Carruthers Gould. London 1900 - First edition.

British parody of the German children's book Struwwelpeter. A colorfully illustrated alphabetical series of comic caricatures of prominent Victorian figures. Each letter of the alphabet is dedicated to a figure accompanied by a rhyming verse with a clear message. Caricatures include the German Emperor, Rudyard Kipling, Lord Kitchener, Henry Irving, Tsar Nicholas II and others. The last page features Émile Zola throwing opponents of Dreyfus into a pot, with a feather in the background reading "J'accuse" (referring to his famous article defending Alfred Dreyfus). The cover depicts Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Edward Harold Begbie was an English journalist, novelist, playwright and poet who wrote political satire and fiction. The illustrator Francis Carruthers Gould was a British political cartoonist.
