BURTON K. WHEELER CONDEMNING NAZIS
(1882 - 1975) American politician of the Democratic Party in Montana; he served as a United States Senator from 1923 until 1947. A leader of the non-interventionist wing of the party, fighting against entry into World War II until the attack on Pearl Harbor. United States Senate letterhead, September 6, 1940, n.p., in part: 'despite your opposition to my stand against peace time conscription, I feel that I should at least set you straight on your insinuations that I am friendly to the Nazi cause...I have never hesitated to condemn as vigorously as I know how the German Bund and all such subversive groups...I am concerned about America and protecting democracy here -- not in policing the entire world...we will fall like France if we adopt fascistic and nazi ideologies in order to 'protect' ourselves from the dictatorships.' Signed at conclusion in black ink. Mailing fold and remnants of album mounting tape at corners. Very good.
