Biography
Lucien Adrion left his native town of Strasbourg at the age of eighteen and moved to Paris where he found employment drawing fashion plates. In the 1910's Adrion travelled widely, to London, Munich and Frankfurt, where he was trapped by the outbreak of the First World War and had to go to Berlin to be de-mobilised. Adrion remained in the city until after the war, working at the studio of and being tutored by Hermann Struck, who was also the master of Chagall. At the age of 30 Adrion began producing small signed lithographs and by selling these, was able to eventually make his way back to Paris. In 1921 soon after his return Adrion staged a solo exhibition of his paintings, from which the art dealer Georges Chéron began to represent him. Taking a studio in Montparnasse, Adrion associated with several young Eastern European painters including Chaime Soutine, Pinchas Krémegne and Michel Kikoine who countered in subject and style the Ecole de Paris Group.
