Sebastiano Panunzi (1845-1924), The Pope playing chess with two Jewish men, oil on canvas, 76x60 cm, signed. The painting is based on an ancient Jewish-Ashkenazi legend that tells the story of the son of Rabbi Shimon bar Isaac of Mainz, who was kidnapped as a child and converted to Christianity. As a Christian he rises rapidly in hierarchic circles, until he becomes pope. According to one version of the legend, the Pope invites Rabbi Shimon to a game of chess and during the game reveals his true identity. He later returns to his father and to the Jewish community, not before he compose an anti-Christian dissertation. In the upper part of the painting, additional scenes of persecution of Jews by Christians are depicted.
