Victor Shrem was born in Israel in 1944.  He grew up and went to school in Jerusalem

and after his army service, he went to Germany for artistic training. He graduated

from the Academy of Ceramics, where he studied artistic and industrial ceramics. He

worked in this field for several years, and participated in several group exhibitions in

Berlin, Paris and Israel.

On his return he continued with his artistic career, turning to a different medium -

painting. He learned the techniques of water-color, oil and mixed-media, in which he

excels. In 1984 he opened his own studio and gallery, Cardo Gallery 1984, in the Old

City of Jerusalem, where until 2014, when the gallery closed, he exhibited his own

work along with art works by other well-known Israeli artists

Victor Shrem is a very versatile artist.  Many of his paintings are inspired from scenes

of Jerusalem and its surroundings, Israeli landscapes and Judaica.  

Through this versatility, what is particularly eye-catching is the main characteristic of

his work - the use of strong, natural, bright colors, in which he is beyond compare.

Victor's most recent work is a series of Hebrew letters. According to the Kabbala,

these letters have special meanings and are endowed with mystical powers. 

Victor has honored their beauty and power in his own unique way. This modern series

is very forceful and has much presence - the paintings virtually create a new, Jewish,

biblical or historical atmosphere in a room.

Victor Shrem's paintings are exhibited in many galleries throughout the world, and

appear in numerous private collections and synagogues .

David Soussana (1946-2014), the artist and former Mayor’s Advisor on Art and

Design – Jerusalem, said of Victor Shrem’s work:

”Victor Shrem is a master of color, in a constant state of intoxication, an intoxication

with color. The experience of colors is to him, the source of everything in art.

In the joy of his creativity, whether in the vibrant colors of his paintings, or in his

sketches, Victor unfolds, in an unusual narrative manner, the richness of everything he

observes.

Victor does not belong to any particular school of art.  He uses all his senses and

experiences in his paintings.  From this flows the continuous dynamic force in his art,

which despite the complexity of his techniques in each and every painting, allows us

to read the magic between the lines.

Standing before Victor’s paintings, the observer encounters a rush of spontaneity and

enchantment, that is so characteristic of his art.”
