Rachel's Tomb
State Medal, 1990
The tomb of our mother Rachel, one of the most sacred places in the tradition of Israel, is located at the top of the Judean Mountains and on the mother road leading from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. In the Torah it is narrated "And Rachel died and was buried in the way of Ephratah is Bethlehem" (Genesis 25:19). And why did Jacob decide to bury Rachel on the Mother of the Road? - Because our ancestor Yaakov expected that the postcards would pass there, therefore she was buried there, so that she would ask for mercy on them.
In 1841 Moshe Montefiore obtained a permit from the Turks to renovate the tomb and build another room. After the Holocaust, the Chief Rabbinate always installed a candle to uplift the souls of Holocaust martyrs.
Rachel's tomb was consecrated in Israel and the Diaspora and many customs were associated with it out of a belief in the power of the ashes gathered around the tomb and the very touch of its own condition. The shape of the tomb is used as a symbol on amulets, ancient books, stamps and coins.
