Spessertine (formerly also known as Spessertite) - a nasosilicate mineral belonging to the garnet group.
Optically the mineral is isotropic, but despite this there are samples where the mineral is abnormally biaxial. The average refractive index of sepsartin is 1.8, and its explosiveness is weak. The common color of sepsartin is red to orange.
Spessartine was first discovered in 1832 in the Sommer quarry in the Spessart mountain range, near the town of Haibach, in the Aschaffenburg district in the state of Bavaria, Germany. The origin of the mineral's name is the mountain range where it was first discovered.
