One of the most famous and mysterious biblical stories is Moses and the Rock.
Thanks to Miriam the prophetess, a well of water accompanied the Israelites during their 40 years of wandering in the desert. When Miriam died, this well, known as "Miriam's Well", dried up and a water crisis was created. The Israelites were afraid of dying of thirst and complained to their leaders, Moshe Rabbnu and his brother Aharon the priest.
God commanded Moses to take his staff and together with Aaron, gather the congregation and speak to the rock in front of the people so that it would bring forth water. However, Moshe struck him twice instead of speaking to him as God required, and for this Moshe and Aaron were severely punished - they were sentenced to not be allowed to bring the people into the Promised Land, and this after their complete devotion to leading the people and dealing with all the difficulties they faced from the Exodus from Egypt. The reason for this punishment is as told to them by God: "You did not believe in me to consecrate myself to the eyes of the children of Israel..." (Bamadbar 20:12)
And so ends the tragic story for Moses. After 40 years of leading the people, in the last year before his death, Moses blamed the Israelites: "The Lord also rebuked me because of you, saying, You too shall not come there" (Deuteronomy 1:37).
Because of the people, neither Moses nor Aaron could fulfill their dream and bring the Israelites into the Land of Israel.
