Sefer Tzemach Tzedek - Piskei Dinim - Vilna, 1884 - First Edition - Copy with the Sentence "I did not merit to understand his holy words"

Tzemach Tzedek - Piskei Dinim, novellae and halachic rulings following the order of the Tur, Shulchan Aruch and their commentators, by Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch. Vilna, 1884. First edition.

Two parts in one volume (two title pages to each part).Part I on Orach Chaim and Yoreh De'ah, Part II on Even HaEzer and Choshen Mishpat.

Ownership inscription on back endpaper (see Hebrew description).

At the end of part II, there are two leaves with "selections" on various topics (leaves 69-70). On p. 69b, the Tzemach Tzedek quotes the Gaon of Vilna, remarking "I did not merit to understand his holy words". The Lubavitcher Rebbe explains that this remark was introduced by the printers in Vilna, and that when the first copies of the book reached Lubavitch, this leaf was hurriedly replaced by a corrected leaf, containing the original phrase "VeEinah Teshuvah" (this is not a refutation).

[2], 286; [2], 50; 70 leaves. Leaves 277 and 280 bound out of sequence. Two title pages to each part. 21.5 cm. Good condition. Minor stains. Tears to some leaves. Remnants of paper glued to the inner margins of first title page of first part. Inscriptions to back endpaper. New binding.
