Three Medals - Jewish Hospital in Hamburg, 1841 - Salomon Heine
Three medals commemorating the establishment of a Jewish hospital in Hamburg in 1841.
1. Obverse: portrait of Salomon Heine (who funded the hospital's establishment) and a German legend. Reverse: the hospital building; the legend "Krankenhaus D.D. Israel Gemeinde" [Hospital of the Jewish Community]; dedication in German, to Betty Heine; and the signature "Alsing" (Hans Friedrich Alsing).
Diameter: 45 mm.
2-3. Two small medals, with a portrait of Heine and identical legends. The medals differ slightly from each other and from the first medal (mostly in Heine's portrait). One of the medals is signed "J.D." beneath the portrait.
Diameter: 22 mm.
Salomon Heine (1767-1844) - Jewish merchant, banker and philanthropist; the uncle and patron of poet Heinrich Heine. Heine donated much of his wealth for the establishment of Jewish institutions in the city of Hamburg, where he resided, and assisted in funding the city's restoration after the great fire that broke out there in 1842. Among other things, he founded the Jewish hospital in the city in commemoration of his wife, Betty.
Provenance: collection of Bruno Kirschner.
