Notes in the Handwriting of the Magid of Koznitz - Commentaries on Tehillim
Leaf from Tehillim, with Rashi, Metzudot and Ivri-teitch (Yiddish translation) [leaf 46, of the Magid's edition, Slavita, 1805, printed by R. Dov Ber]. Handwritten notes on wide margins, commentary on Tehillim, in the handwriting of the Magid of Koznitz, R. Yisrael Hofstein, which were printed in his book Tehillot Yisrael (Warsaw, 1861), according to this manuscript.
The Tehillim of the Magid of Koznitz was bequeathed to his grandson R. Yissachar Hofstein, who bequeathed it to his son-in-law R. Moshe HaCohen Singer who printed the book Tehillot Yisrael based on this manuscript. Noted on the title page: "This commentary was written by him in his own handwriting on the sheets of his book of Tehillim…". This commentary was printed in additional editions (Mukacheve, 1899; Lodz, 1923; Warsaw, 1926; Mukacheve, 1929; etc.) and was printed in 2013 by the Machon Sifsei Tzaddikim in a newly edited edition according to a photocopy of this manuscript which was inherited by R. Elimelech of Grodzisk Mazowiecki (Grodzhinsk).
The Magid of Koznitz (Kozienice), R. Yisrael Hofstein (1737-1814, Encyclopedia L'Chassidut Vol. 2, pp. 542-548) was a leading rebbe who spread Chassidism throughout Poland. He was born in Apta and according to Chassidic lore the Ba'al Shem Tov told his parents to name him Yisrael after his own name saying that "all the Heavenly entourage participate in his joy". From his youth, he was known as a prodigy and prominent Torah scholar. After his marriage, he became close to R. Shmelke of Nikolsburg who at that time served as Rabbi of Rychwał and he encouraged R. Yisrael to travel to the Magid of Mezritch. The latter relied on R. Yisrael to edit Kabbalistic books and siddurim (he was reputed to have studied 600 Kabbalistic works before coming to the Magid of Mezritch). After the death of the Magid, he became a Chassid of R. Elimelech of Lizhensk (Leżajsk) and was considered one of his leading disciples which spurred people to say that he inherited his "power of heart" from Rabbi Elimelech. In 1765, he began filling the position of a Magid Mesharim (preacher) in the city of Kozienice and from 1786, thousands of Chassidim began to throng to his court until he became one of the foremost rebbes in all Poland. R. Yitzchak Meir Alter, author of Chiddushei HaRim is one the famous disciples of the Magid and was raised in his home.
The Magid of Koznitz wrote many books, on all Torah topics: halacha, novellae, homilies and kabbalah and was a leading kabbalist in his days. Some of his Kabbalistic compositions expound upon early Kabbalistic books and the books of the Maharal of Prague.
Leaf, 33 cm. with very wide margins (the height of the printed text: only 19 cm). Greenish-bluish paper. Good-fair condition. Stains and wear. Worming to margins.
