Minhag Avot Tanya - First Edition, Mantua, 1514 - Lacking Copy with Ancient Handwritten Replacement
Minhag Avot Tanya. Customs and laws. [By Rabbi Yechiel son of R' Yekutiel Anav, author of Ma'a lot HaMidot]. Mantua, 1514. Printed by Shmuel Latif.
Abridgement of Shibolei HaLeket, with many additions. The book was prepared as a halachic composition to accompany the siddur according to Italian tradition (Minhag Bnei Roma). It was printed anonymously, but in some editions it was attributed to R' Yechiel son of R' Asher (the Rosh) and to R' Yechiel son of R' Tzidkiya.
Printed without a title page. On the last page is the printer's colophon, from the month of Sivan 1514 in Mantua.
Originally: 25 signatures of 4 leaves ([99] leaves). This copy is lacking signatures 1-2 ([8] first leaves), replaced in ancient square handwriting and with a decorative title page. On the title page is the signature of Rabbi "Shmuel Vintura". On the first page of the handwritten part is an ownership inscription in cursive Italian script [from c. 17th century].
[12] handwritten leaves + blank leaves; [91] printed leaves (signatures 3-25). 18.5 cm. Fair condition. Worming affecting text, wear and stains. Worn, torn and detached binding.
In following editions, the composition was called Tanya Rabata or Tanya Rabati. About the author and the composition, see: Y. Z. Feintoch, Talmudic traditions and versions, Ramat Gan 1985, pp. 65-76; Y. Ta-Shema, in: Italia, 11, 1995, pp. 48-49.
