Two Halachic Responsa - Sunrise and Sunset on the Jerusalem Horizon / Spelling the Name "Jerusalem" in a Divorce Document
Two halachic responsa. Unsigned letters. The first was sent to R. Shmuel Salant ca. 1900, and the second was sent to Jerusalem's rabbis ca. 1940.
* Long interesting letter discussing the parameters of a halachic day at the Jerusalem horizon (4 pages, unsigned). Sent to "The great Rabbi Shmuel Salant". [Jerusalem, ca. 1900]. The author describes the many attempts made by him and his companions to measure the exact times of sunrise and sunset from different locations in the city [R. Netanel Sofer and others in Yeshivat Etz Chaim were extremely involved in this matter, and their reaserch was the basis for the timetables in the calendar for Eretz Israel by R. Yechiel Michel Tucazinsky].
4 pages. 27.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Wear and slight tearing in the fold lines.
* Unsigned monograph regarding the custom of writing the name "Jerusalem" on divorce documents without the final "Yud". The author casts doubt on this custom and suggests that the name be spelled as it is pronounced, with the "Yud". He requests that his opinion be added anonymously to the decision of the other rabbis. During the course of his comments he makes mention of Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, thus that the letter was written ca. 1940.
5 leaves ([7] written pages). 22.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Creases and minor tears. Filing holes.
