John Baskett - Large Format Bible - Elaborate Edition - Oxford, 1717
The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New, newly translated out of the original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. By His Majesty's special command, appointed to be read in churches. Oxford: John Baskett, 1716-1717. Two parts bound together. English.
A magnificent large format edition of the Bible, with dozens of fine engravings depicting various scenes from the Old and the New Testament.
In 1709 John Baskett purchased the exclusive patent to print Bibles in England. This edition of the Bible is Baskett’s most important work, highly regarded for its large, elegant type and the detailed engravings which accompany the text. Due to numerous misprints, this edition is referred to as "A Baskett full of Errors". Volume, 54 cm. Good condition. Stains. Professionally restored tears. Exquisite leather binding with gilded decorations, slightly damaged (lower part of spine is torn), gilt edges. Ex-Libris label ono inner side of front cover.
From the collection of Haim Hefer.
